The tecuan, or jaguar, is a familiar figure in Mexican art. In Guerrero, the Tlacololero dance drama depicts the hunting of a jaguar by a group of hunters and their wonder dog, Maravilla. The jaguar is hunted down after many comic incidents. Frequently performed now on Christian holidays, an analogy between the death of the jaguar and the sacrifice of Jesus Christ may be implicit in the enactments, which serve to bind the "new faith" to older practices.
